Space and planning
How much space an elevator needs depends on your house and the system you choose, so we work it out with you at the consultation. Your project’s drawings list every detail, including the power and lighting your electrician provides.
Machine room
Hydraulic needs a small machine room or a steel cabinet we supply, indoors and as close to the shaft as possible. The cabinet is about 30 inches wide, 17 deep and 59 tall; the exact size depends on the pump. Where it runs hot, we add an oil cooler or a larger oil tank. Traction needs none; where the space above the cab is tight, its controls go in a small cabinet just outside the shaft.
By system
| Hydraulic | Traction | |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 660 to 1,000 lb | 660 to 1,000 lb |
| Controls | A machine room, or a steel cabinet about 30 in wide, 17 in deep and 59 in tall; indoors, close to the shaft | In the shaft, or in a small cabinet about 35 in wide, 12 in deep and 11½ in tall; under cover, close to the motor |
Your project’s drawings give every measurement: pit, headroom, shaft and controls.
Power, lighting and phone line
- Power
- Single-phase needs a dedicated 220-volt, 60-hertz, 30-amp circuit with neutral and ground. Either system can also run on three-phase, on a dedicated 400-volt, 60-hertz, 25-amp circuit with neutral and ground. Either one ends in a lockable fused disconnect next to the elevator controls.
- Cab light
- A separate 110-volt, 10-amp circuit.
- Lighting
- The pit, and the machine room (hydraulic) or the top of the shaft (traction), each need a guarded light of at least 10 foot-candles, with its switch within 18 inches of the access.
- Phone line
- A landline or a cellular line for the alarm phone, provided by the owner.
- Rescue
- On a traction elevator, if the cab ever stops between floors, a technician brings it to a floor from a small panel in the top-floor door frame or the wall, without entering the shaft.
